Take Off

HGs - This site takes a range of directions from SW to SSE from different parts of the field. These are marked on the OS Map.

For PGs this is mainly a S – SSW site.

Top Landing

Easy top landing for HG and for PG.

Slope Landing

With this being a cliff site there is little slope landing options, but if the beach is covered then the field opposite the field gate can be used as a ‘bomb out’, but it has many gorse bushes.

Bottom landing

This site does not suit bottom landing and will be very hazardous if the tide is in. In an emergency you can try to land on the beach at foot of cliff, then carry out toward western end (Bass Rock) and follow path uphill onto Downderry road (B3247). .Alternatively, with more height, head west on to the Downderry Beach (HG option).

Hazards

Primarily the limited bottom landing options, hence the site is only recommended to experienced pilots.
Top landing in strong winds could be hazardous becasue of rotor rolling off the high vertical cliff.

XC Flying

This 90m cliff offers good lift in the right conditions with a 1.5 km beat. However this also offers the opportunity to get away onto the full ‘ Whitsand Bay run’ to Rame Head and Looe. However PGs should note it can be difficult to return to the cliffs from the east after Portwrinkle as there is a SE face to traverse which may be out of wind.

Directions

There are 2 separate access/parking points for HGs and for PGs.

Take coast road west from Crafthole (2 km approx) or East up from Downderry on the B3247.

Parking

Limited parking off the main road towards Crafthole (GPS 50 21’ 48; 4 20’ 39). Please don’t block the gateway. Access over the gate, directly into T/O field.

Access

For HGs use the track into field off Tregunnus Lane (GPS 50 21’ 58; 4 21’ 08). Drive along the track with hedge on your left and on through the access gate into main field. Unload gliders and park off main field behind hedge (see map). NOTE- we cannot use this access when fields are in crop ie. normally from May until late August.

Note: take extreme care when driving back out onto Tregunnus Lane as visibility left and right is very poor.

For PGs there is limited parking off the main road towards Crafthole (GPS 50 21’ 48; 4 20’ 39). Please don’t block the gateway. Access over the gate, directly into T/O field.
